Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is a 5 year dentistry course in India, which includes 4 years of study and one year of internship. The Dental Council of India regulates the dental education in India.
Students can appear for the entrance exam organized at national or university levels. NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is mostly considered for providing admission to BDS courses. After graduation, candidates may pursue a post-graduation in Master of Dental Surgery (MDS).

Dr. Pierre Fauchard is a well known Dentist. He was a French physician recognized as the ‘Father of Modern Dentistry’. Fauchard was called ‘the surgical dentist’ because of his innovative ways of treatment.
He made remarkable improvisations of dental instruments and introduced dental fillings for cavities. He wrote the book "Le Chirurgien Dentiste" (roughly translated as "The Surgical Dentist")
