Fractions are compared to find out which is larger or smaller.

**Demonstration:**

Same Denominator Method’ is used to understand this concept

When two fractions have the **same denominator** they are easy to compare:

- 4/9 is less than 5/9 (because 4 is less than 5)
- Which is larger: 3/ 8 or 5/12 ?

Multiply 8 × 3 = 24

Multiply 12 × 2 = 24

Therefore let us try that (**Important:** what we apply to the denominator we must also apply to the numerator):

- We can now see that
**9/24**is smaller than**10/24**(because 9 is smaller than 10). - So
**5/12**is the larger fraction.
